Couple lifts Pangasinan folk songs from oblivion
retrieved from August 15, 2010 Philippine Daily Inquirer
SAN CARLOS CITY, Philippines –Lazaro Milanes and his wife, Shirley, have made it their mission to save the folk and love songs of their native Pangasinan from oblivion.
The Milanes couple, who are educators, revive and popularize native songs and compose new ditties so they can keep the Pangasinan language alive.
“This is our contribution to preserve our cultural heritage and our language which is fast dying,” said Lazaro, 49, a professor of English at the Pangasinan State University (PSU).

On Going Abroad
Going abroad, to find employment has been the popular thing to do among Filipinos, that even a vast number of teachers are joining the trend. Many of the counties we end up in, could recognize the daring nature of our culture requiring much courage taking the risk of staying in somebody else’s land struggling to find work. One major reason would cite deciding to leave the country is a better compensating salary, regardless of whether or not they pursue working in the field they went to school for: in the case of the educators who leave, it’s regardless of whether or not they continue teaching.
A Better Hekasi Teaching
HEKASI or Heograpiya, Kasaysayan at Sibika, is one of the fundamental subject areas in the elementary grades based on Dept.Ed curricula, along with English, Mathematics, Science and Filipino. But among these subject areas, to some, HEKASI, is considered a dull subject to teach. Why?
Speech Curriculum: A Need In School
Speech is a vital part of man’s normal life. Simply defined, it is the ability to speak, transmit information, ideas or attitude from one person to another. It is the most immediate vehicle to convey one’s feelings and emotions towards other fellow beings. It is said to note, however, that most of our pupils are lagging behind in this aspect. They lack the ability to communicate their thoughts and ideas particularly in the classrooms. How about introducing the learners especially in the elementary level to a speech class that hones speech skills? Once these learners step in college with developed skills in speech, they will not end up being a bunch of defenseless, clueless, and ill-prepared students’ not ready to face the battles of smarts and college – level public speaking.
Kimi Cojuangco Fights For BNPP Revival
By: Loejan S. Anudon
07-24-2010
New 5th District Representative Kimi S. Cojuangco sought the revival of the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) by re-filing the bill that was originally authored by her husband, former Pangasinan Representative Mark O. Cojuangco, in the House of Representatives in its first regular session. The new 5th District Representative seeks the immediate study of the new pro-BNPP, which is according to her is now more reflective of former House Bill (HB) No.6300 as it now contains refined essences and amendments of what were discussed during the interpellation and debate during the 14th Congress. Originally, the bill was referred to as House Bill No. 4631 but it subsequently evolved into House Bill No. 6300 after it passed approval by the Committee on Energy and referred to the Plenary for second reading, Rep. Cojuangco said in her two-page pro-BNPP bill submitted to the House of Representatives on July 13, 2010.
Pangasinan language must live - governor
Lingayen, Pangasinan (6 August) -- Pangasinan language must live and be here to stay.
This in a nutshell was the message of Gov. Amado Espino, Jr. when he spoke before members of the Ulupan na Pansiansay Salitan Pangasinan (UPSP) during its 10th anniversary celebration at the Pangasinan State University Audio-Visual Room here last Wednesday.
In recognition of the governor's effort to promote the use of the Pangasinan language, the group passed a resolution making him honorary president of the group.
Espino opted to speak extemporaneously rather than read his prepared speech.
While the Capitol is the face and heart of the province, the Pangasinan language, he stressed, is its soul. For this, he had directed the entire provincial government workforce to use Pangasinan as its official language during flag-raising ceremony on Mondays.
