Seeding the waters

Cool out the election fever. As el niño begins to burn himself out, seed the farms with grains; stock the waters with fishes. Soon, the hungry will be less; the angry, too.

A Tangent Course In The Realm Of Change

By "Biaza" (Real name: Blesilda dela Rosa-Salvador)

A sphere so steady in space…
A touch so light it hardly registers…

An impact so explosive it knocks out all that is dark and quiet…

And suddenly-- life so vibrant and true, it cuts through the flesh
and makes one feel brand new

The sphere:

Sometime in 1580, in the western coast of Northern Luzon, Philippines, the province of Pangasinan was created. In it a distinct town named Claris went on its daily quiet existence: folks planted, fished, and made salt and bagoong, children played, and early Chinese traders came and went.

The Spaniards who came to see and to conquer fancied the red bricks that made up the town’s well and soon were calling it the place of the red well or pozo rubio in their native tongue. Henceforth Claris came to be known as Pozorrubio. The story about the name’s origin though beloved is half a myth. The awaran or historical accounts claim that the town’s original name Claris was derived from Juan de la Cruz Palaris who led the revolution against Spain in 1762, to eventually proclaim himself king of Pangasinan.

With the last big meeting came the first big rain!

It was the second pouring of rain in the season of el niño but it was the heaviest so far with the most plump of splatters. The farmers had prayed hard for it, and so did we all who dread the drought and the fires. In truth of fact, every living thing wished for the rain as they melted with each hot breath.

The ballot papers are here!

At approximately 3 o’clock this afternoon, April 28, 2010, the 58 boxes containing the official ballot papers for the 58 clustered precincts of Pozorrubio were delivered from the Provincial Treasury in Lingayen. It was a most solemn moment. The first automated election is really here. It is not a dream anymore or a nightmare to wake up from. It is stepping up our doorsteps, it has entered our doors.

29 kapitanes, balikbayans, the Cojuangcos pep up Chan’s campaign

They were omnipresent. They were there with the administration team on the evening of March 26, the official start of the campaign, as it held its first barangay meeting. They are still there with the team to this writing, which is twenty-one days later and less than a month before May 10 election.

The twenty-five (25) kapitanes may be there every night mainly to root for the four(4) among them (Kapitanes Fely Ann Maligsa of Imbalbalatong, Simeon Quinto of District 2, Rogelio Amansec of Alipangpang and Herminigildo Ibaan of Palguyod) who are running for councilors of the town of Pozorrubio under the local party of Lakas-Kampi-CMD of three-termer former Mayor Art Chan.  It was like stating, “we are here for our people”.  There are a total of 34 barangays; thus 5 of them probably had opted to back the opposition. The other candidates for councilors of this party are Kgd. Kelvin Chan, Kgd./Atty. Joseph Frianeza, former Vice-Mayor Dr. Carlos Gramata, and Ex-Kgd. Jovito Estaris.

A commencement speech for Batch 2010 of Saint Philomena’s Academy
Written and delivered by: Dr. Francisco Raul D. Salvador

School Director Reverend Father Teofilo L. Calicdan, Campus Minister Reverend Father Dionisio Luzano, School Principal Ms. Lina M. Valloyas, Members of the Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff, Parents, My dear graduates, Ladies and Gentlemen:

A pleasant evening to you all.

This afternoon when I entered the open doors of this familiar building, I was brought back in time when thirty eight years ago, I walked away from the portals of our beloved Alma Mater Saint Philomena's Academy, unsure of what was in store for me or what tomorrow may bring.  I never dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, much less to be the commencement speaker as I am now. But here I am, and I am truly honored to be your guest speaker on this, your graduation day.

PANGASINAN: An Ethnocultural Mapping

Retrieved from "Cape Bolinao" by Gin.Quesada

History and Culture always take a back seat in this age of global network and cyber transactions or what most young scholars describe as a postmodern world. Understandably, the focus is always on the global market and the pursuit of
international status and recognition. The locale and the national are suddenly rendered imagined cultures and spaces, its historical and cultural import as romantic constructions of the elite.

But basic education still has its responsibility to inform young Filipinos about their ethnic origins, language, history and culture.  The subject of identity and ethnicity is still paramount in the interest of humanity in search of knowledge and homeland. Histories and cultures are not only constructed by the elite for language in itself has different forms of expression and articulation not exclusive to the written language of the elite.
